Embracing Imperfection: A Singer’s Confession

I have a confession to make, I am far from perfect and I don’t particularly like to practice!

If you're a fellow singer or musician, you might know that the journey of practicing and perfecting your craft can be a rollercoaster of emotions. Some days, the mere thought of sitting down to practice feels like a heavy burden. It's as if the universe is conspiring against you, pushing you to do anything but practice. But then, there are those moments of sheer triumph, when the fruits of your labor become evident.

The truth is, practicing isn't always glamorous. It's not about belting out flawless melodies effortlessly every single time. Instead, it's about embracing your imperfections and working tirelessly to improve them. It's about dedicating time and energy to your art, even when every fiber of your being resists it.

When I began my singing journey, I initially relied on my natural talent, but I soon realized its limitations. During my college years, daily practice was easier without the responsibilities of a job or children. Now, as a mother of three, finding time for practice is a daily challenge.

The voice, like any instrument, demands care, discipline, and dedicated focus to address areas in need of improvement.

As a singer, practice often forces me out of my comfort zone. It compels me to explore music that's not always easy or familiar. It pushes me to tackle the challenging parts that I'd rather avoid. It insists on my vulnerability, demanding that I confront the possibility of failure. But in those moments of struggle and discomfort, I find growth.

It's in the midst of these struggles that I learn something new about my voice and myself. Practicing forces me to slow down and pay attention to the nuances of my singing. It gives me the opportunity to hear my inner thoughts and discern what feels right and what doesn't. It's a journey of self-discovery, one that extends beyond music and resonates in every aspect of my life.

And then, there's that magical moment when everything clicks. When a musical passage that once seemed impossible suddenly unravels before me. It's in these moments that I realize, "Oh, this is just a pattern," or "Oh, it's just a minor third down." The music becomes a language I understand, a puzzle I can solve. Those "aha" moments are like gold, fueling my passion and determination to keep going.

There's no denying that the path of a disciplined and consistent singer is challenging. It requires dedication, perseverance, and the willingness to embrace imperfection. But the payoff, oh, the payoff is monumental. It's in the joy of discovering that you can sing what once felt unattainable. It's in the satisfaction of hearing your voice evolve and grow stronger with each practice session.

So, to my fellow imperfect singers, I say this: Embrace the struggle, the resistance, and the moments of self-doubt. They are all part of the journey. And when you find yourself in the depths of practice, remember that the payoff is worth every ounce of effort. Your voice, like you, is a work in progress. And in that imperfection lies the beauty of your unique sound and your unwavering dedication to the art of singing.
